Effective business communication depends on connectivity

by Gwynne Murphy

Everyone wants a piece of you and your business.

B2B is increasingly similar to B2C. Even though you’re a business, other companies are appealing to your consumer instincts that are dormant during the work day.

Can Telephone Communicate

There are companies that want to help your business tell your story; to help you get out there; to spread the awesomeness that your company makes, offers and/or provides; to coach you on how to differentiate your company from the pack.

Yeah, all of that’s important, but don’t get distracted from what is really important — a solid, dependable foundation from which your company operates. I like to call this foundation your business needs.

Don’t get stuck in the mud. Build a foundation.

Sure you’ve got a brilliant idea that inspired you to create your business. But, let’s be realistic, starting a business is difficult. About half of new businesses fail within five years, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Despite that statistic, we’re still dealing with that pesky recession – everything costs more, everyone wants a job and hardly anyone is rolling in enough dough to be a secure financial backer. That’s why learning to make a choice between what your business needs and “nice to haves” is essential for your business making it.

Take care of your needs first.

Once you have what you need, you can devote resources to some fun stuff that would be “nice to have.”  Some business needs are easy to determine and others may be a little more difficult to pinpoint. Whether your need is writing a solid business plan, hiring a dedicated workforce or finding a communication tool, like your phone system or Internet, with 99.9% up time, hone down your needs to be what your business has to have to thrive.

Connectivity is the name of the game.

One of the highest priorities for many business owners is the ability to reach their customers and to have their customers reach them. This makes sense on the most elementary level, and it aligns with everything the media tells us about business.

Staying connected is a necessity. When we have witnessed the 24-hour news cycle truncated down to mere minutes (and sometimes seconds) in the dawn of real-time reporting, what makes you think you can run your business communication with only your cell phone and your Google Voice number? So before you start figuring out your strategy for raising awareness of your company, make sure that potential and current customers never have to work to get in touch with you. Make it easy for them, while staying on top of your business and taking control of your response time.

Get connected & stay there.

Your business needs solutions and tools designed for business. Most times, consumer goods just don’t cut it when your business is dependent on a solution working day-in and day-out.

Connectivity is such a simple idea but can be a complex business need to acquire. But word on the street is that you should get it.

What have you determined as your company’s top business need? Is it staying connected? What do you do to ensure connectivity? Let us know in the comments.

SMBs should be social – tips from The NOW Revolution

by Clair Fabrizio

The monthly Triangle AMA (American Marketing Association) meeting at Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh was last week. Each attendee had the pleasure of hearing a presentation from Amber Naslund and Jay Baer about their book The NOW Revolution. The talk was filled with humor and entertainment; Jay even cracked on my coworker Chris Moody for having so many connections & friends.

Amber & Jay kicked off the event with an example of how every customer is a reporter. They pulled up a “highly negative” tripadvisor.com review of a budget hotel. The review was funny and effective; no one in the AMA audience will ever plan a trip to this hotel. Not only are the friends and family of this reviewer hearing of his horror movie like experience but the thousands of TripAdvisor users are hearing it.

"I can feel death creeping"

Marketers have created their own Frankenstein; we now have real-time business. There is no time to call a meeting to decide how to respond to each review or tweet. This information is immediately public. Social media changes the company/buyer relationship from a master-to-servant relationship to a peer-to-peer relationship.

Responding to real-time business

To adapt to the changes and success of social, companies must be faster, smarter, & more social.

Amber & Jay emphasized that doing social and being social are different. Having a Twitter account doesn’t make a company social. What makes a company social is the ability to trust employees enough to empower them to respond consistently to thanks & complaints.

ThinkGeek.com has a strong culture and they act like one organism. They hire for passion and train for skill. One of the first screening questions for interviews is “Star Wars or Star Trek?” This question is asked to each potential employee from the President down to warehouse workers. By asking this simple question, they have put a barrier up to restrict non-geeks to working for them.

Don’t just pick up the positive phone calls

Social Interaction Steps

  1. Thank people for compliments, and apologize for complaints.
    • Complaints are an opportunity for market research. Without the complaint, your company would be unaware of an occurring issue.
    • Studies have shown that people who observe companies responding to complaints have a more positive view of that brand.
  2. Reward
    • Sweet Leaf Tea responds to some positive comments with a coupon; they respond to negative feedback with an apology & a coupon.
    • Customers want to be heard. It is a missed opportunity when a customer keeps trying to attract the attention of a brand and the brand is not listening.

Social should be a skill and not a job. Just like typing documents started as someone’s job and is now a skill everyone needs to know, so is social for a company seeking to keep up.

What the Verizon-Bandwidth.com Deal Means for Innovation

by dmorken

Today, as you may have heard already, Bandwidth.com signed a landmark commercial agreement with Verizon in which we agree to exchange VoIP traffic at an industry-first deal at a rate of $.0007 per minute – an incredible industry benchmark.

Because Bandwidth.com is emerging as the leading provider of network services to Voice 2.0 application providers with the major “household name” strategic partners, and Verizon is the largest telecommunications company in the US, this deal sets a new precedent and standard.

The goal of this post is to outline why it matters in the big-picture for the use of current and cutting edge VoIP services and applications, and for innovators cranking out the next generation of those services and applications.

The Deal Itself

This particular agreement is one of the largest VoIP traffic agreements in history, and the “triple-zero seven” agreed-to commercial rate is going to drive down the costs of these services for millions of consumers.

Basically, this agreement recognizes that VoIP traffic is an information service, and not a legacy telecom service, which is a key piece for an innovative commercial deal like this.

Even more, this deal recognizes that all VoIP traffic – regardless if it begins in IP or is ultimately received by the called party in IP – is covered by the deal. This is an industry first and a huge victory for innovators, and hence, in a very real way helps fuel next-gen communications and applications.

And it should be noted that absent this deal, that currently within the industry, the average rates for VoIP traffic are still significantly more expensive than $.0007 – so that’s a radically low price.

So, Why the Heck Should I Care?

If you’re not familiar with the adoption of VoIP within the communications industry, this probably sounds like a bunch of inside baseball. But you should care, and you should care a lot.

Think of it this way – the lower the rates that Bandwidth — a major VoIP service provider, is able to exchange VoIP traffic with other providers, the lower the cost it is for you to make calls from anywhere. It’s just that simple, there really is a direct connection here – no pun intended.

More importantly than just VoIP pricing, this really should open the door for further innovation by both major players and startups alike. For Bandwidth.com, it means we can roll out new, innovative products on the modern network and win customers on the merits of the innovation and value we can deliver on a level playing field. And that’s precisely why we think this deal is a big leap forward for the industry.

We started Bandwidth.com with a vision of being a new kind of communications company – one that would disrupt the status quo with a purpose built network and new business models, enable innovation, and go well beyond the “dumb pipes” reputation that the industry has earned over the years. This vision means the value is not in the network itself, but innovating on top of it and allowing others in the industry to do so as well by offering our network on a wholesale basis, with easy to plug-in APIs and aggressive rates…all to encourage more competition and innovation in this market.

For this reason, we launched our own business VoIP services with a product called Phonebooth, which has the goal of providing SMBs with a more powerful, radically simpler, and more affordable phone service. We then we launched our nationwide all-VoIP network soon thereafter.

Last year that network served up billions of minutes of VoIP calling – not only through our own products, but also for major partners. And that’s what’s important to note here – all of the cool new communication services we know and love depend on the cost of doing business in VoIP, and for them, this deal is huge.

We hope this deal paves the way for rabid innovation in the VoIP world, and in the process to make our point that today’s innovators in voice and emerging applications do a lot more than just carry your voice – they are multi-functional apps with multi-dimensional functionality, allowing you to do a more than you can imagine than just old fashioned voice calls.

They will offer transcription and multi-modal “follow me” functionality, and so much more. In an age when my phone is just one app on miniature, handheld computers like the iPhone, cross-pollinating functionality blurs the lines – which empowers and enriches the lives and productivity of the customer.

That’s what this agreement boils down to. We’re breaking down the barriers to innovation in the VoIP world by offering landmark pricing on the wholesale side of our network.

Why The Major and Emerging Innovators Will Love This Deal

Put simply – this deal gives certainty to the major communication innovators in this space as they want the lowest possible wholesale pricing for their VoIP traffic. In previous years, innovators wouldn’t know exactly how much it might cost them to provide their services. There was simply no visibility on reliable and cost-effective rates for exchanging VoIP traffic among service providers. This deal changes that.

This agreement provides them with that certainty – but also gives them highly competitive pricing that sets the standard to make VoIP even more affordable for the innovators.

The end result is that they can focus on building stellar products that benefit consumers now, rather than holding back and waiting for affordable rates some day way off in the future.

Just think about how often you use innovative VoIP products online – with some at absolutely no cost to you. Just imagine what they could build if they could be certain that the cost of those calls weren’t going to go through the roof all of a sudden, because of pricing uncertainty.

The point is – the products and services that millions of consumers love and use every day are precisely the reason why this deal is so important.

With more competitive pricing, the innovators and entrepreneurs are unleashed through this commercial deal, and we hope that you’re going to see huge investments in ambitious new products and services that will change how you communicate with loved one’s, or do your job, or simply have fun.

Just The Tip of the Iceberg

The big takeaway from this agreement is that it helps usher in a new era in the communications industry. It creates new possibilities, particularly for new ventures as it provides much greater access and scale for entrepreneurs.

Competitive pricing on VoIP traffic means that you can expect to see voice capabilities plugged into a much greater array of new products and services, many of which I expect will come from entirely new startups and entrepreneurs that can finally get into a game that was previously cost-prohibitive and dizzyingly ambiguous.

Bandwidth is a perfect example of this new paradigm as we pursue innovation of our own Phonebooth application while supporting other innovators by opening up our network on a wholesale basis.

And that’s really the best part – this agreement is ultimately going to spur growth in the economy as existing and new ventures now have the ability to explore new products at a scale that was previously impossible.

New Call Group Features and Minutes – the More, the Merrier

by Chris Moody

We are pleased to announce that we will be releasing significant Phonebooth feature updates over the next few weeks. These updates address two of the top three requests made by our UserVoice community. Effective immediately our customers can get a sneak peak of the new features on our Phonebooth Free service.

These Phonebooth updates are largely concerned with the way Group calls are presented to Users. The feature changes include:

Group Announcement

This feature plays a short message when a a User receives a call from a Group. The message gives the User the option to “press 1” to take the call or to hang up to leave it in the calling group. This feature provides a solution to some issues expressed by our UserVoice community. Now, you know when an incoming call is from a Group or direct, have the ability to choose whether to take the call and prevent calls from falling into a User’s mobile voicemail when a phone is turned off or is without coverage.

Caller ID Number Control

We have added the ability to choose whether to display the inbound caller’s phone number or the number dialed when sending the call to a Group User. This will allow a User to know if a call is business or personal when answering from a mobile phone.

Caller ID Name Control

Phonebooth OnDemand will soon be able to manipulate the Caller ID name delivered to IP-phones. This feature allows Admins to either prepend characters before the Caller ID name, totally replace the name or just remove it altogether. This feature will only be available in Phonebooth OnDemand.

Adding Minutes Has Arrived

While we made dozens of enhancements and feature updates mainly related to group functionality, we took some time to give Phonebooth Free users more. An update exclusive to the Phonebooth Free platform, we have created the capability for Phonebooth Free Admins to add additional minutes to their service for only $0.03 per minute – a rate 50 percent less than previously announced. To learn more, view a brief step through in the the Phonebooth Free interface.

If you would like to preview the new features, please login to your current Phonebooth Free account.

We are excited to make these new features available to our customers, and we sincerely thank all the participants in our UserVoice community. Please continue to challenge us in our Feedback Forum.
